Dear Colleagues,
Mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder, are important causes of disability worldwide. Current therapies fail to result in remission in a significant portion of people who suffer a mood illness. Such therapies do not address the specific and fundamental pathophysiology that underlies these diverse illnesses. Abnormal inflammatory processes have recently been recognized as potential pathophysiological pathways and therapy targets for mood disorders, particularly in patients with treatment-resistant illness.
Whereas neuronal cells allow communication, glial cells play a crucial role in several processes such as inflammation and oxidative stress. This protects the nervous system by producing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory proteins, as well as helping neurons communicate with one another.
The goal of this Special Issue is to present current breakthroughs in the field of novel drugs and in the development of pathophysiological animal and cellular models. In addition, results from studies on immunomodulatory therapy for MDD, bipolar illnesses and other neuropsychiatric disorders will be included, together with the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
