Dear Colleagues,
A large body of research has demonstrated that women are prone to mental illness during special times such as adolescence, menstrual period, perinatal and postpartum periods, and menopause. Fluctuations in sex hormone levels during reproductive transition periods are thought to be related to the onset of mental illness in women, in addition to personality traits, social support, neural plasticity, etc. These factors have major effects on emotion, cognition, brain structure/function and the brain network in women, as well as depression/anxiety in the adolescent, postpartum, and menopausal periods. Identifying the specific mechanisms that underlie mental illness during the entire life cycle of women may provide a rationale for optimizing treatment protocols. Therefore, the main goal of this topic is to provide the reader with a wide overview of mental disorders throughout the entire life cycle of women. This can include novel genetic, cellular, animal, neuroimaging, psychological and behavioral research. We welcome original research reports, as well as communications, meta-analyses, and review papers.
