Dear Colleagues,
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs) is one of the leading causes of death in the world. In the US, primary prevention of ASCVDs has become a main goal to promote public health since the early 1950’s. The traditional ASCVDs risk factors such as old age, hypertension, smoking, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus and abdominal obesity have been identified in numerous population-based studies. In addition to these traditional ASCVD risk factors, some novel risk factors, e.g., sleep apnea, inflammatory biomarkers and genetic factors have also been recognized in recent years. As a result of a concerted effort to control these risk factors, the incidence of ASCVDs has significantly declined in the US. Since most studies were conducted in Western countries, evidence for differences in race/ethnicity have not been verified. A sex difference in ASCVDs related comorbidity and mortality has been found in previous studies. In this special issue, we emphasize the importance in the traditional and novel risk factors for ASCVDs and welcome all types of manuscripts (original article and review article) submitted to the special issue.
