Dear Colleagues,

Neuroplasticity refers to alterations that the nervous system undergoes in response to external or internal stimuli. It includes a number of processes and mechanisms such as the birth, survival, migration, and integration of new neurons; neurite growth; synaptogenesis; modulation of mature synapses; and the construction and transformation of neural networks. The hippocampus, a critical brain region known for its remarkable lifelong plasticity, plays a key role in cognitive and emotional functions. Understanding hippocampal neuroplasticity has become increasingly important in the development of therapeutics to address associated behavioral dysregulation. The hippocampus undergoes neuronal remodeling in several neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, hippocampal dysfunction and cognitive impairment are commonly linked to aging. Recent advances in both clinical and preclinical non-invasive imaging techniques have cast light on hippocampal plasticity in neurological diseases and aging. Nonetheless, the relationship between neuroplasticity in various neurological disorders and its effects on hippocampus-dependent behavioral dysregulation are not fully understood.

In this special issue, the main goals are to provide the reader with a wide overview of current knowledge in the field of hippocampal neuroplasticity and behavioral changes in neurological diseases and aging, along with pioneering in vitro, in vivo, and in silico experimental procedures to explore and modulate hippocampal neuroplasticity. We invite authors from various research fields to contribute original research articles illustrating hippocampal neuroplasticity and behavioral changes in neurological diseases and aging using a variety of scientific techniques. We also welcome submissions of review articles, communications, and perspectives on all aspects of this subject.

Accepted papers will be published in the journal (as soon as accepted) and meanwhile listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, reviews as well as short communications are preferred. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office to announce on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts will be thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. Please visit the Instruction for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) in this open access journal is 2200 USD. Submitted manuscripts should be well formatted in good English.
